Principles

Avli was founded with a set of principles, and all that we do seeks to be driven by our strong adherence to them. They act as a roadmap to achieving our goals and mission.

Accessibility

  1. We seek to make our platform accessible to as broad a swath of the population as possible. The language we use will be discernible and familiar to the vast majority of Cypriots.
  2. In this spirit, the goal of the platform is to offer completely multilingual perspectives in Greek, Turkish and English.

Democracy and Multi-communality

  1. We believe that democratic expression is a value that all societies should aspire to, and aim to reflect that in this organization. We reject the dominative hierarchical models of the past, and aim to shift our society into a more democratic one. We believe in a multi-communal Cyprus that reflects and respects the multiple peoples that call this island home.

Ecological Sustainability

  1. We believe the current economic paradigm is destroying the planet, and seek to shift Cyprus into a model, ecologically forward thinking society.

Peace

  1. We reject the partition of Cyprus as a vicious status quo that reinforces the exploitation of the many for the benefit of the few, and oppose the militarization of Cyprus.

Structural Change

  1. We believe in changing the structures of our society. While we support individual action in spirit, the goal of this platform is to invigorate, inform and empower Cypriot society to address the structures, whether in Cyprus or the larger world, that affect us.

Solidarity and Allyship

  1. Our platform exists in broader solidarity with social movements in Cyprus and the world. We aim to be radically inclusive and embrace diversity and will not tolerate discrimination and stand against it in the wider world. We are explicitly anti-fascist and seek to oppose it not only at the surface, but to build a society where fascists, who often prey on those left behind by mainstream society, no longer have an ability to recruit regular people into their ranks.
  2. We envision ourselves as an addendum to, not a replacement for, the mammoth work that has been taken up by groups and movements that we consider our allies in intersectional justice. These groups include, but are not limited to, the LGBTQI+ community, feminist groups, the refugee and migrant community, youth, labor and all people who work to create a just, equitable and sustainable world.
